Rethink Urban Habitats
The vision for the project Rethink Urban Habitats is a city, which is richer on life. A city, which provides the same feeling as the first real spring day: the nature is alive and we are part of it! We have the straightforward objective to increase the cities’ biodiversity!
The project is thus about rethinking the city as a habitat – not just for human beings, but also for animals and plants: the biodiversity! To increase species, which Denmark, the EU and the UN have committed themselves to protect against decline before 2020.
The starting point is that the majority of Europe’s population live in cities, and that the city is the place where many people experience nature – this being either by the fodder board, in the parks or along the small canals. This so-called “everyday-nature” also holds an unused potential for species, which otherwise have a rough time in Denmark as recent international studies have shown.
Through information campaigns, physical initiatives and knowledge, this can and should be changed. Rethink Urban Habitats is a demonstration project taking place in Aarhus and other cities in the Central Danish Region, which gives tangible examples of how to further biodiversity in the cities while increasing the quality of the city. This will ensure that we can continue to enjoy the nature we surround ourselves with.
