Gardens
This category covers backyards, gardens, allotment gardens, and many more. These are the places where we are closest to nature and where we can live and do what we want. Therefore, it is here that most of us can make a difference for biodiversity.
Gardens and allotment gardens are typically placed in a mosaic of green areas separated by streets and they cover a large part of the urban areas. These areas often create large connected areas which are vital green corridors through the city and beneficial for especially mammals, amphibians, reptiles and ground dwelling insects.
These gardens can be of any size and shape from the extremely well-manicured gardens with tiles and lawn grass to the wild gardens with old trees, thick bushes and a wild flora.
Backyards are small, green spaces, which are usually separated by tall buildings. However, there are many of these. Species such as birds and flying insects can easily spread from backyard to backyard, if the necessary living conditions are present. As with the gardens, these can be found in various forms, but they are often more cultivated than the gardens.
