Parks
A very good thing about parks is that they often have large trees. The majority of the parks’ nature value is affiliated with these large trees – especially if they are allowed to grow old. There is a tendency to cut down trees before they age too much and this is very unfortunate.
The biggest areas of the parks are made up of well-manicured lawns. These do not hold any real nature value, but they fulfil a purpose often important to the city’s population: they look neat and safe. They also provide a good place to sunbathe, play and have picnics in. The trimmed lawns often only contain 2-3 types of grass and they are mowed weekly during the summer.
These lawns are one of the most frequent landscape elements in the city as they are found almost everywhere: in cemeteries, in parks, residential neighbourhoods and industrial areas. Many of them make up the city’s recreational areas, which people use for e.g. ball games, but many are unused all together. And then they might as well be converted to species rich grass.
