BioBlitz
It is the wildest race! In 24 hours, the city’s people can participate in the search of all the life, which is present in the city. Everything must be registered: trees, bushes, herbs, grasses, moss, caterpillars, butterflies, bees, buzzing flies, dragonflies, snails, spiders, crustaceans, worms, birds, mammals, reptiles, toads and so much more. Who will find the most plant and animal species in 24 hours? And how big is the biodiversity in the different locations?
The data from the BioBlitz is entered into The Nature Database app and it is therefore possible to stay updated online with what is found. This way everybody can keep track of what is going on exactly like in a sports competition. Who will find the most species? From participant to participant, area to area, city to city. The BioBlitz can be held as a competition between streets, blocks, cities, municipalities, regions and countries.
In a BioBlitz competition, everybody is on their home turf: kindergartens, schools, families, students, clubs and scientists. Everybody can participate on their own terms and conditions – thus making it an activity with meaning and substance.
BioBlitz takes place outdoors. This entails that you will get dirty hands, wet socks and you might even get a bit cold if you are not wearing enough warm clothes. But you experience a lot: you listen for bird callings through the noise of the traffic, you notice that the park’s flowers smell really good, and you realize that the dots in the sky are actually birds migrating to Sweden.
Scientific communication can be a bit boring (just a tad!), but competitions such as BioBlitz motivates people and it also strengthens the cooperation between the participating blocks, cities and countries. Who would not want the most nature?
